2020 Lacrosse Season Cancelled
Submitted By reno on Monday, April 20, 2020
To all CMLA Players, Coaches, Volunteers, and Parents,

We want to thank you for your patience as we navigate through this unprecedented time.  Normally at this point of the year our teams are made and practices are in full flight preparing for the first games of the season.  Unfortunately this year is different, we are not playing our favorite summer sport - Lacrosse. We have traded in cheering on teams at local arena's and fields to cheering on front line workers who are tirelessly and selflessly doing everything they can to provide essential services during this time of need.  We want to say thank you to all these people during these tough times and to everyone else for practicing social distancing so we can flatten the curve.

The Ontario Lacrosse Association, our organizations governing body, has issued a directive that all in person lacrosse activities be postponed until at least May 15.  On Wednesday April 15th, we also received notification from the City of Cambridge that all Community events, venues, arenas and fields are closed until June 30th (details can be found here).  The unfortunate reality is this does effect our season.  We have been in regular contact with Zone 8 and the OLA with regards to how COVID-19 will impact lacrosse this year.  The OLA (our governing body) has not made a final decision on the remainder of the season at this point. However Zone 8 has made the very difficult but appropriate decision to cancel the Minor Box Regular Season, including tournaments for Zone 8 associations.  The full statement can be found on the Zone 8 website or by clicking on the link below.

The CMLA Board of Directors have been in regular contact and met virtually a couple of times throughout April to determine how to appropriately respond to COVID-19.  All of our discussions have occurred with priority being placed on the health and safety of our members. We don't have all of the answers yet. Our hope is to play lacrosse in some form this year once Public Health and the City of Cambridge opens the venues and deems it safe to do so, but it will not be in the form of a normal season.   We are working with Zone 8 and the OLA to determine what that could look like and we will communicate more details as they become more clear.

Again, our players, parents, coaches and volunteers safety and well being is our top priority.  As a result the CMLA Board of Directors has unanimously decided to offer full refunds (including the approximately $25/per player administrative fee that the OLA and other service providers have declared non-refundable) to all registrants that have paid in full.

It could take up to 30 days to process the refunds, please be patient.  Refunds will be provided in the same form that you used to pay. Please only contact us for refunds if you have not received your after the 30 day period.

If things change and there is an opportunity to run lacrosse programming in some form we will communicate details on the programs and how to sign up at that time.

In the meantime, please continue to practice social distancing and stay active with a stick in your hands.  Stay connected with us on our social media platforms and we will be posting some fun challenges to keep the strong CMLA community connected.

If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] .

We hope that you and your families are staying safe.  Thank you again for your patience and understanding as we work through this.

Lacrosse will be back and CMLA will be better than ever, lets get through this together.

Take care.

Jason Whissell

CMLA President
